Hello im new to modding and dont know where to go i intend to use mods to make some small machinimas of sorts it feels like a huge task for a potentially very small pay off

How do i replace or tell the game to use certain chracter models over other characters like actually making a model that fits the skeleton is irrelevent i already have that bit sorted i want to know how to change the files of the game could someone help point me in the right direction please?
